Brian moved to Utah from England in 1999, where his family was stationed with the USAF. In 2010, he joined the core group of Refuge when it was just a few families in an apartment, soon joining the staff as a worship leader and eventually answering God’s call to serve as the Executive Pastor and then the Pastor of Preaching & Vision in 2014.

Jesus has blessed him with a beautiful and talented wife and helpmate, Lexy. Together they have two little boys named Ari Judah and Ira Lewis, as well as one little lady, Daphne. Brian loves teaching the Bible, writing about Jesus and the Church, reading anything with words on it, and dating his wife. On his book ledger, you’ll find frequent appearances from C.S. Lewis, John Piper, N.D. Wilson, Douglas Wilson, J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Beale, Jim Hamilton, J.K. Rowling, and many others. Brian has a Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Studies.

Pastor Brian writes frequently at his blog, Mouse & Mane, and regularly contributes to Deeply Rooted Magazine.

Hailing from the great state of Wisconsin, Dan is an avid hunter and home chef with the understandable weakness of rooting for the Packers. He has a background in product management, particularly in the hunting and fishing industries, so he usually has a freezer full of elk.

Dan and his wife, Amelia, enjoy hospitality, wide spaces, beekeeping, and their German Shorthaired Pointer, Sako. They have one little guy, Barron, born in 2017. Dan has a passion to see the people of God grow in their love for Jesus, the lost saved, and families grow in community.

Cody Hockin - Student Pastor

Born and raised in the great state of Utah, Cody joined Refuge Church in 2010. He followed God’s call to start Student Ministry at Refuge in 2012, and a year later became the official youth pastor. Cody has a passion to point the rising generations to Jesus and help them cultivate a genuine relationship with him through Bible teaching and transparent, life-on-life discipleship.

Cody met Cindy in college, where she taught him to love sushi as he convinced her that marrying him would be a great idea. She agreed, and they’ve been married since 2011. Cody is a design nerd who makes his living in the visual communication field. In other words, if you use Comic Sans on your birthday party invitation, he won’t attend on principle.

Norm has journeyed far, physically and spiritually. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah and raised Pueblo, Colorado with brief stops in South Carolina, Texas, Germany, and Washington. Norm was also a Mormon, Muslim and Wiccan before Jesus Christ saved him on the side of the I-215 Belt Route. He began attending Refuge Church on Easter of 2011, serving as the Head Usher and teacher before the elders of Refuge in agreement with God’s calling asked him to serve as the Pastoral overseer of the Children’s ministry.

Norm met his amazing and beautiful wife Talia, while serving with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship at Colorado State University-Pueblo. They married in 2001 and moved to Ogden in 2008 and have one incredible little girl, Opal. Norm loves teaching and evangelism, and self identifies as a Scrabble, Trivia, and Theology Nerd who will rarely ever turn down the invitation for a game.

Darren, our resident lumberjack, has been a part of Refuge from its earliest days. He has a passion to see men discipled to boldly lead their families, make disciples, and lead in God’s Church.

You can often find Darren reading books written by smart (and probably dead) people, drinking a raspberry white mocha (don’t judge), or hanging out with his amazing family. Darren is married to Kayla, and together they have four amazing kids: Jude, Sailor, Evia, and Boaz.

Joe, his wife Jen, and their four kids hail from the Pacific Northwest, having arrived in Utah through a combination of God’s providence and a job developing software for a startup company specializing in alternative energy. He makes his living as a software engineer working in Ogden. Yes, he is as smart as all that makes him sound.

Joe loves rock climbing, cycling, and hanging out with his family. He’s an early-riser, always up for a cup of coffee before most reasonable people set their alarms. He’s also one of the most earnest, genuine guys you’ll ever meet. He loves to see families discipled in community, especially dads. We’re really blessed to have him serving Refuge as Overseer of House Church Ministry.

One more thing. Ironic as it is as a software engineer, Joe doesn’t believe in Twitter or Facebook, so you can only follow him in person. Not that we’d recommend doing that, as it might be creepy.
